My name is Gloria Massengo, I will be representing my lovely country, Congo Brazzaville. I came to Canada at the age of 11 years old with my siblings. Coming to Canada was life changing for me because everything looked so different, starting from how streets looked like to how people behaved. When I came to Canada I didn’t know how to speak English, it was hard for me to adapt to the culture for a moment but with time I started to fit in. I have graduated from high school and went to college after for my business administration program. Growing up, my mother has always been my rock, she’s my everyday inspiration and she means the world to me. When I was in Congo, she always took care of us and made sure that we were happy with our lives. If I get the opportunity, my dream will be to make people who are in Africa feel special, like my mother did for me when I was a kid. When I was in Congo, I saw some of my friends not going to school because their parents couldn’t afford it. That really broke my heart, because I would go to school and my friends would stay home doing chores. I remember giving one of my friends my old notebooks and some pencils, since she was not going to school, I used to tutor her with what I was learning in school. I wish to go back there and help more people in need like her. I know not only my country has that problem, there’s some other countries in Africa who need help too and we all need to stand and raise awareness. I want to be part of an organization where they will help me reach my goal with people in Africa such as Beauty of Africa. In my spare time, I like to be creative, currently I’m teaching myself how to sew and also making jewelry. I like sewing because it allows me to be creative and it challenge me a lot. the best feeling is when I actually finish a project and wear it, I feel really proud of myself! Look forward to see you at the Gala on June 10th!
